Hello / Moni!
Welcome to My blog of everything to do with volunteering in Malawi.
In late October this year, I am heading to Malawi for 2 years to work as a Volunteer IT Advisor to the Ministry of Health. I will be part of a team implementing a much needed patient/HR management system, recommended by the WHO (World Health Organisation). As you can imagine, healthcare there is incomparable to the standards of the UK, where we have the much maligned NHS. (More on the NHS in later posts.) So this project aims to dramatically increase the MoH’s patient capacity by having an efficient and effective record management system in place. This will allow the very few doctors, nurses and midwives there to carry on their invaluable work to the best of their abilities and resources.
My friends who have known me for a while may know that I have long been a fan and supporter of MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders). Much of this originate from my fanaticism of the American TV drama ER. Fewer friends will know that I was more recently inspired by MSF’s Dr Chris Bird, who proves that it’s never too late to change and make a difference. His story is very interesting and extremely inspiring. I highly recommend a read of his Bird in the bush blog about his work in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Future posts will be less formal and hopefully more fun! For now, without further ado, I am officially launching
Operation VSO Malawi 2012.
Beginning with this blog post and actually tell all my friends I’m leaving! I’d also like to involve them as much as possible because I know I will be relying on them for my own support and to promote this cause.
Your fellow humans need you!
Please take 2 minutes and visit my fundraising page which explains why all placed VSO volunteers need to fund raise. You may be extra interested to find “The fun bit / Kickstarter” section if you need your house or car cleaned (don’t we all???) 🙂
Any donation, large or small, is sincerely appreciated and will make a difference to lots of people less fortunate than ourselves. All slacktivism or clicktivism efforts are also appreciated. Please share away on any social network!
Thank you / Zikomo!
P.S. The SU is for all you PRINCE2 practitioners out there. Geek joke. Sorry!
