A few weeks ago, I heard an interesting police story (警察故事) from another VSO volunteer.
A colleague of his arrived very late for a meeting. But his colleague explained… He was on a minibus to come to the meeting. The minibus was stopped at a standard, regular roadblock. One of many on Malawi’s main roads. The officer and the driver had a heated discussion and the driver was even asked to get out of the minibus, which is usually not a good sign.
The dispute, over missing paperwork or something, continued. To the extent where the police demanded that the whole minibus was taken to the police station. When the minibus arrived at the police station, everyone got out of the bus and the police swiftly arrested one of the passengers, who turned out to be a wanted murder suspect!
The whole dispute with the driver was just a show. A ploy to get the whole minibus to the nearest station where more officers were waiting. Excellent policing or what?!
If it’s true, my highest respect for the Malawi Police officers involved.
