As volunteers living in Malawi, without television and fast, stable Internet, it’s very easy to become out of touch with the rest of the world. So while I learned the news of Nelson Mandela‘s death on the same day it happened, 5 December 2013, I haven’t heard or read much else about it.
Plenty has been said since of his life. At 95 years, I think it’s fair to add that he’s had a good innings! The world has lost a great man, who brought about real change. Very few has even come close to his impact on the world and inspiration to millions.
As another notable visionary, Steve Jobs, said: “Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.” The new has a tough act to follow.
My favourite Cantonese song is actually about Nelson Mandela; Racism, freedom and peace. It’s called 光輝歲月, by a band called Beyond, written in 1991. The title is translated to English as “Glorious Years”. Enjoy!
Rest in peace, “Madiba”.
