Yesterday was election day in Malawi. It’s the first time the country is holding presidential, parliamentary and local government elections on the same day. Check out my colleague Judy’s nice post about it. The result is still not out yet!
Ok so Malawi is electing its president today, Tuesday 20th March and VSO have advised that we volunteers stay at home for the next couple of days in case there is any trouble. Which could be something or nothing. So I have been cleaning (the dust gets everywhere) and gardening and listening to the radio. The government has chosen Zodiak radio station to be the official election radio station which means they will publish the official results. There is only 1 TV station here and most Malawians don’t have access to a television so radio is the communication medium of hobsons choice!
There are 3 main parties –
Joyce Banda of the Peoples Party (padlock party – they have an lock and key on their flag)
is the current president and took office when the previous incumbent Bingu Wa Mutharika died of a heart attack in 2011
